Organization Policy on Principal Investigator Responsibilities (Policy No. 103.24(a))
November 2007

The Organization requires that the principal investigator (PI) of a human subjects research application must be either: a faculty member of JHU, or a senior staff member of APL or the JHM hospitals designated by the administration as an individual who may serve in this capacity. Faculty ranks that may serve as a PI are: Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Instructor, Research Associate, Lecturer, or Assistant.  The PI must understand the responsibilities associated with conducting human subjects research.  PI and co-investigators must comply with federal regulations, state and local laws, and Organization policies. PIs are responsible for training staff and for conducting the research at the Organization. Ultimately, they are responsible for the safety of the human subjects participating in the study. The JHM IRB guidance on “Investigator Responsibilities” explains these requirements.
