Organization Policy on Bone Marrow Transplant Procedures in Children
(Policy No. 102.6)

April 2006

One Department of the Organization, the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, provides bone marrow transplants as part of standard clinical care for adult and pediatric patients who seek health care.  Bone marrow donation by appropriately HLA matched family/friends/others is part of all bone marrow transplant clinical procedures.  In addition to providing clinical care, the SKCC participates in, sponsors, and develops research directed at improving the outcome of individuals who undergo bone marrow transplants.  It is the policy of the Organization that experimental or investigational bone marrow transplant procedures are classified as human subjects research and as such require JHM IRB review and approval.  The human subjects research review requirements apply to all proposed recipients of the harvested marrow or manipulated marrow product.   It is the policy of the Organization that a bone marrow donor (adult or child) is not considered a human research participant unless the procedure for collecting the marrow is an experimental or investigational method.
